Dec. 25, 2012 at 11:12 PM

EDMONTON, Alberta, Dec. 25 (UPI) -- A pickup truck plowed into a building in Edmonton, Alberta, early Tuesday, igniting a fire that destroyed eight businesses, authorities said.

District Fire Chief Lorne Corbett said the truck struck a Bonanza restaurant in a strip mall about 1:30 a.m. MST, and the fire spread quickly through the other businesses.

The blaze caused an estimated $12 million in damage, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

It wasn't known what happened to the truck driver.

Arson investigators were at the scene, the CBC said.
