12 killed in violence in Karachi

KARACHI, Pakistan, Dec. 25 (UPI) -- A Pakistani religious leader was wounded, but survived an attack Tuesday in which his guard, his driver and four police officers were killed, police said.

Police spokesman Imran Shaukat unidentified gunmen attacked Maulana Aurangzeb Farooqi, leader of Ahl-e-Sunnat-wal-Jamaat, as he came out of his madrassah in the Gulshan-e-Iqbal area of Karachi, KUNA news agency reported.

Farooqi was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The attack sparked protests across the city.

At least six people were killed and more than a dozen others were wounded in separate incidents, Shaukat said.
