Blizzard wreaks havoc in Norway, Sweden

JAERAN, Norway, Dec. 24 (UPI) -- Snowstorms that hit Norway and Sweden wreaked havoc on the countries' mass transit systems and caused traffic delays, officials said.

In Norway, nearly 200 passengers had to be evacuated from three different trains that became stuck in snow drifts in Jaeran Sunday, The Norway Post reported.

It took authorities several hours to get the passengers out of the trains because of the blizzard-like weather, officials said.

It was unclear Monday when train service in the area would resume.

A snowstorm that hit western Sweden caused train services between Helsingborg and Angelholm to be canceled Sunday, The Local.se reported.

A number of road accidents were also reported throughout the country.

Two cars collided early Sunday in Skane; one person became trapped in their vehicle, which had to be cut open.

Police said one person involved in the accident was brought into hospital with serious, but not life-threatening, injuries.

"We are warning of slippery roads basically in all of the country," said Monica Naslund, spokeswoman at the Swedish Transport Administration.

"I don't think you should stay away from the roads in Skane, but you should keep track of the traffic situation and if it is really bad you should consider whether you really need to go out."
