NEW DELHI, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- Thousands of protesters gathered in New Delhi on Sunday to speak out against a gang rape and beating of a 23-year-old woman on a bus, despite a ban on protests.

Protesters showed up Sunday in central New Delhi, even though earlier in the day police put up security barriers and banned protests because of clashes on Saturday, CNN reported.

The protests were over what police called the gang-rape and beating of a 23-year-old woman on a moving bus in the capital on Dec. 16. The name of the victim has not been released, but protesters have called her Damini.

"We support you Damini. We'll keep fighting for you," a middle-aged woman said Sunday.

About 35 protesters and nearly 40 police officers were injured at the Saturday protest, while a video journalist was fatally shot by police on Sunday.

Police used high-pressured water cannons to disperse crowds on Saturday and Sunday, officials said.
