Man says he attacked kids for fame

ZHENGZHOU, China, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- A man who allegedly stabbed 23 children and an elderly woman at a school in central China said he wanted to become known before the world ends, police said.

Min Yongjun, 36, confessed to police in Henan province, Xinhua, the official government news agency, reported. Ouyang Mingxing, deputy director of the Guangshan County Bureau of Public Security, said Min told investigators he was inspired by news accounts of three attacks on kindergartens in April and May 2010, including one where seven children and two women were killed with a cleaver.

Min, believing he was doomed, said he "hoped to do things to impress the world of his existence, before he died," Ouyang said.

In statements to police, Min said he was angry because his father confined him at home after he had an epileptic seizure. He said he ran from the house Thursday night after beating his parents and his two young daughters and wandered in the woods, feeling he had been "abandoned by the world."

In the early morning, he said he broke into a house and attacked an elderly woman. At 7 a.m., he ran to the Chengpeng Village elementary school next door and attacked the children.

Min said he had been told doomsday was approaching by a woman named Jin Guozhu, who is now a fugitive. Police searched her house and found material preaching the doctrine that the world is about to end and that "divinity spirits" will then come to power.
