Cambodian protesters use pop song

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia, Dec. 18 (UPI) -- Cambodian protesters said they danced and rapped to the popular "Gangam Style" song Monday in Cambodia to draw attention to their human rights cause.

The Cambodian Daily Independent Newspaper said the protesters were calling for higher factory wages and better protection for migrant workers, and used the dance to get international attention.

The Independent said about 200 people gathered outside the National Assembly to deliver a petition containing about 11,200 signatures.

The Independent said land issues have become an important issue in the country, with the powerful evicting up to 400,000 people from their property in the last decade.

The Phnom Penh Post said protesters have attempted to become more creative during protests.

"We want to reveal our suffering by dancing to this catchy Korean song, because we have already done our best to deal with this issue with no result," protester Phal Vannak said.

The Post said protesters wore T-shirts with names and thumbprints of land evictees and hats with the words "stop forced evictions."

The Post said the event was organized by Friends of December 10th, a group of human rights defenders.
