Part of scalpel left in Swede's nose

Dec. 17, 2012 at 6:34 PM

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Swedish doctors said they were unable to locate a piece of a scalpel that broke off in a patient's nose during surgery.

Doctors at a Stockholm clinic treated the patient, whose name and gender weren't identified, for an apparent broken nose after a fight, TheLocal.se reported Monday. During the procedure, unbeknownst to the doctor a portion of the scalpel broke off. The patient was sent home and suffered palpitations during the night.

A subsequent X-ray showed the metal piece of the scalpel and doctors performed a second surgery to try to remove it, but were unable to find it.

Doctors said a third surgery is planned once the patient fully recovers from the most recent procedure.
