Hunger-striking radical said in danger

Dec. 17, 2012 at 12:33 PM

ROME, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Italian doctors say they are worried that veteran radical politician Marco Pannella's health may be at risk if he continues a hunger strike.

Pannella, a longtime leader of Italy's Radical Party, has been on a hunger strike over the conditions of Italian prisons, Italy's ANSA news agency reported.

Doctors caring for the 82-year-old said Sunday that if Pannella continues the weeklong strike, he could be in danger of suffering kidney failure and cardiovascular complications.

Pannella has staged a number of protests over the years on a variety of topics.
