Gay marriage backers march in Paris

PARIS, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- Organizers of Sunday's demonstration in Paris say they want the new president to live up to his promises on same-sex marriage in France.

The Federation LGBT told Radio France Internationale President Francois Hollande pledged during his campaign to legalize homosexual marriage, and Sunday's march was aimed at holding him to that.

RFI said gay activists had not planned the march in the capital, but were compelled to respond to a major rally earlier this month by opponents of legalized same-sex marriages.

Public opinion polls indicate about 60 percent of France's population back legalization of same-sex marriage; however there is solid opposition among fundamentalists Catholics and the right-wing UMP party, RFI said.
