British doctor guilty of misconduct

MANCHESTER, England, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- A former British army physician was found guilty of failing to protect an Iraqi hotel worker who died in British custody in Iraq in 2003, a tribunal said.

The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service in Manchester on Sunday said it found it was misleading and dishonest when he testified at courts-martial and a public inquiry about what happened to Baha Mousa, The Guardian reported Sunday. The panel will now decide whether Keilloh is fit to continue in medical practice, the newspaper said.

Keilloh denied any coverup, saying he only saw dried blood on Mousa's face when he attended to the 26-year-old hotel worker. Mousa was found to have suffered 93 injuries after being arrested and beaten by soldiers while in the custody of the 1st Battalion, Queen's Lancashire Regiment.

But the panel decided Keilloh, who is now a general practitioner at Mayford House Surgery in Northallerton, knew of Mousa's injuries and filed to conduct a thorough examination of his body. The tribunal said he also didn't properly assess other detainees or protect them from ill-treatment or inform senior officers of abuse.
