Hamas coalition declares intifada

Dec. 15, 2012 at 11:55 AM

HEBRON, Israel, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- A coalition of Islamist militant groups declared a new Palestinian intifada that will present a united front against Israel.

The group called itself the National Union Battalions and issued a video declaration of an uprising it said was under way in Hebron and would be led by Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Fatah and the Popular Front for the Liberation Palestine.

"This is the beginning of a third Palestinian intifada, which is erupting from the heart of Hebron and will spread to all of Palestine," the video said.

The National Union Battalions demanded Israel withdraw from all occupied lands and dismantle military checkpoints. It also called for the release of tax revenues collected in Hebron that Israel had been withholding from the Palestinian Authority.

Ynetnews said Hebron remained tense this weekend after noisy demonstrations and confrontations with Palestinian police by Hamas supporters.
