Saudi man suspected of killing daughter

MECCA, Saudi Arabia, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- A Saudi man was arrested when his daughter died shortly after a court sentenced her to prison and a whipping for immoral behavior, police said.

Gulf News, citing a local news site, Sabq, said a hospital in Mecca called police Tuesday. The father brought his daughter in, saying she had collapsed suddenly, but doctors who examined her body found bruises.

Police officers allegedly found blood stains in the family home. The father was held for questioning.

The 17-year-old was convicted of going out with four young men when she was 15. Her father had called police after his daughter claimed she had been kidnapped by strangers on the way home from school, but authorities said her story was a lie.

The teen and the young men were convicted Tuesday, and she received a sentence of six months in jail and 160 lashes. But investigators say the father was so enraged by his daughter's conduct he administered a vicious beating that killed her.
