KHARTOUM, Sudan, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- Students clashed with police in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum during protests over the deaths of four university students from Darfur, officials said.

Protesters Sunday called for the toppling the regime and for justice for the four students' deaths at the University of el-Gezira, the Sudan Tribune said.

Some demonstrators held signs hawking support for the Sudan Revolutionary Front rebel coalition while other protesters shouted their support of Sudan Liberation Movement leader Abdel-Wahid Mohamed Nur.

"Killing students is the killing of the nation. ... Peace, justice, freedom," demonstrators shouted.

Sudanese Justice Minister Mohammed Bushara Dousa said Monday the deaths would be investigated.

Witnesses said police fired teargas into the protesters, mostly students affiliated with the universities of Khartoum, Neelain and Sudan.

Students and activists alleged the National Intelligence and Security Services were behind the deaths of four students whose bodies were found in a canal near el-Gezira Friday, the Tribune said. Earlier in the week, students protested exemptions for Darfur students from tuition fees that are administered differently at each university.
