SAKATA, Japan, Dec. 9 (UPI) -- An All Nippon Airways jetliner partially overshot a snowy runway while landing at Shonai Airport in Sakata, Japan, Saturday night, government officials said.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism said Sunday none of the 161 passengers or six crew members were injured, Kyodo News reported.

China's Xinhua News Agency reported the jetliner had circled the Yamagata prefecture airport for more than an hour while the ground crew finished snow removal before it attempted its landing. The aircraft's automatic braking system then failed to adequately slow it down, leaving the pilot to apply the brakes manually, Xinhua said.

The airline said most of the plane's body overran the runway, but the aircraft sustained no damage.

Ministry officials labeled it a serious incident that had the potential for major damage, Kyodo said.

The plane had just completed a flight from Tokyo.
