Four people were reported dead in Croatia and another person died in Serbia, Bulgaria's Sofia News Agency reported Sunday.
In Serbia, snow had been falling for 30 hours as of Sunday, Serbia's Beta news agency reported.
The situation was the worst in Vojvodina province, where more than 100 vehicles -- including several buses -- were stuck on a snow covered road in Banat, Serbia.
Firefighters in the town of Backa Topola helped dig out cars and evacuate passengers who were stuck on a stretch of about 7 miles of road, Beta said.
Motorists were stuck for hours on a main Serbian highway leading to Hungary, Sofia reported.
In Croatia, the international airport was closed for part of Saturday.
