Corsica has 20th homicide of year

CALVI, France, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- The French Mediterranean island Corsica recorded its 20th homicide of the year when a nightclub boss was fatally shot in front of his home, officials said.

Jeremy Mattioni was shot and killed Friday as he left his home in Calvi, Radio France Internationale reported. Mattioni's 11-year-old stepson was injured.

The attack was the 20th homicide in Corsica this year, giving it the highest homicide rate in Europe. So far, none of the homicides have been solved.

Also in Corsica, about 20 explosions took place on the island overnight, seriously damaging homes and completely destroying houses that were under construction.

Police arrested police arrested a man possession of explosives in the town of Calvi in Saturday. No other details on the explosions were reported.

Investigators said recent crime on Corsica has been linked to feuds over protection rackets that target tourism-related business and property development.
