Snowstorm hits France, flights delayed

PARIS, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- A snowstorm in France delayed airport operations Friday, with Paris' Charles De Gaulle airport running behind schedule, officials said.

The country's first serious snowfall of the season, moving eastward across France, caused delays of as much as an hour at the airports and warnings of possible flight cancellations -- and promises from airport authorities they are better prepared to handle the snow than in 2011, when a snowstorm stranded thousands of passengers, Radio France Internationale reported Friday.

The Thalys rail network, connecting France and Belgium, warned of possible disruption, and police in Valais canton, Switzerland, issued an avalanche alert Friday, advising against hiking and cross-country skiing.
