BRUSSELS, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- NATO appears to be moving toward military action in Syria, the Russian envoy to the military alliance warned Friday.
Russian Envoy to NATO Alexander Grushko said Russia doesn't believe the Syrian crisis can be resolved by military force, RIA Novosti reported. Russia has generally opposed sanctions against the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad.
NATO announced Tuesday it will deploy Patriot missiles in Turkey. The Turks have been concerned about fighting spreading across its border with Syria.
"This is the first step showing that NATO is after all becoming involved in the conflict and we do not rule out that this involvement will deepen as a result of some incident or provocation," Grushko said.
"This system is designed to fight against warplanes and has an anti-missile capability. However, taking realistic scenarios into consideration, it is difficult to believe that Syria is interested in ratcheting up tensions in the region."
