Snow allows UK ski resorts to open

LONDON, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- Snow that blanketed Britain this week allowed two ski resorts to open for the first time this season on Saturday, officials said.

More snow was predicted for throughout the weekend, with temperatures getting down to 23 in some areas, The Daily Telegraph reported.

The Met Office issued a low-level warning of severe weather for much of the Britain that will be in effect until midnight Sunday.

"Due to the recent wet weather there is an increased risk of icy patches, even on roads that have been treated with salt, where water run off/seepage may wash off any earlier salt treatment," the office said in a statement. "The public should be aware of the risk of ice on roads and pavements."

Meanwhile, snow on Cairngorm Mountain and the Lecht, both in Scotland, allowed ski resorts there to welcome hundreds to the slopes this weekend.

Colin Kirkwood, the marketing manager for a resort at Cairngorm, said: "It's looking good. We have good numbers of people renewing their season tickets, so people seem to be keen to get out there as soon as we have got some good skiing to offer them. And it looks like we will be able to do that, starting on Saturday."
