Police carry out anti-mafia operations

NAPLES, Italy, Nov. 30 (UPI) -- Police in Italy carried out several operations Friday against mafia organizations throughout the country.

Police issued 29 arrest warrants Friday for Camorra gang members, including 12 women, some of whom were pregnant, and several underage drug dealers, Italy's ANSA news agency reported.

The warrants were for alleged drug sales in Torre Annunziata southwest of Naples.

Police arrested 12 suspected members of the Neapolitan Camorra mafia in Naples Friday, ANSA said. Those arrested are accused of loan-sharking and extorting money from local businessmen.

In Reggio Calabria, police arrested six members of the Calabrian 'Ndrangheta mafia on a range of charges including extortion, drug trafficking, theft, money laundering, corruption and illegal weapons possession, ANSA said.

Those arrested belonged to an 'Ndrangheta clan called the Gypsies, police said.

And in Rome, police seized nearly $650,000 worth of assets from Gaspare Como, 45, the brother-in-law of reputed Mafia head Matteo Messina Denaro.

Como has been convicted of mafia association and extortion, ANSA said. Firms, property and luxury cars were among the assets seized.
