MURCIA, Spain, Nov. 27 (UPI) -- A Spanish paratrooper has died after his parachute failed to open during a training session in the Sierra del Cagitan, officials say.

Jose Manuel Zambrana, 31, died Monday when his chute's manual operating mechanism failed, ThinkSpain reported.

He was stationed at the air force base in Murcia and was said to be an experienced skydiver and instructor.

An Army nurse at the scene of the accident was unsuccessful in reviving him.

The air force opened an investigation.
