Chinese chicken co. denies using toxins

BEIJING, Nov. 27 (UPI) -- A Chinese company that supplies chicken to the U.S. fast-food chain KFC says it does not use toxic substances to make its birds grow faster.

The Suhai Group, based in Shanxi province in northern China, said all its meat is examined by inspectors and has been sent to provincial authorities for testing. It said its chickens do not grow abnormally fast.

Suhai is a supplier for KFC restaurants in China although the chain said only about 1 percent of its chicken comes from the company. Suhai also supplies colleges, airlines and other mass-feeding operations and exports chicken to Saudi Arabia, Japan, the Republic of Korea and South Africa.

News reports last week said Suhai was using food supplements containing toxins so dangerous they can kill flies.
