Local officials said the earthquake damaged some houses in the Mongolian prefecture of Bayingolin, Xinhua reported.

"Although the quake was strongly felt in the township, no casualties have been reported so far," Liu Wenchun, secretary of the township committee of the Communist Party of China, told the state-run news agency by telephone.

He said government workers were inspecting the damage.

The quake had a depth of nearly 5 miles.
