Canadian couple survives grizzly attack

CALGARY, Alberta, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- A Canadian couple were recovering at a Calgary hospital Monday after surviving a weekend mauling by a grizzly bear, authorities said.

The man and woman, whose names weren't provided, were attacked about 3 p.m. Sunday when they encountered a sow and at least one cub while walking near Cherry Creek near Kimberly, CTV Calgary reported.

The TV network said the adult bear went after the woman first, then attacked the man when he tried to fend it off with a walking stick. The man fled to a nearby home and called for help.

The couple, who suffered serious injuries to their legs, groin, head and arms, were airlifted to the hospital.

Wildlife officers said the bear would not be killed since it had no history of aggression, CTV said.
