KABUL, Afghanistan, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- Two suspected suicide bombers were arrested in Kabul, Afghanistan, foiling a suicide bombing attempt, an Afghan government spokesman said.

The pair was arrested Thursday night in possession of vests filled with explosives, Afghan interior ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqi said.

The suspects' intent was to explode the bombs during Saturday's observance of Ashura, Khaama Press reported. Ashura is an annual day of fasting and mourning by Shiite Muslims.

Eighty people were killed or injured last year in a suicide bomb blast in a Kabul shrine last year. A Pakistani militant group claimed responsibility for the attack, Khaama Press said.
