AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- The government of the Netherlands is scrapping its controversial "weed pass" aimed at preventing border-crossing drug tourists," a minister said.
Justice Minister Ivo Opstelten said the pass, introduced last May in the country's south, will not be extended as planned, Radio Netherlands Worldwide reported.
Instead, Opstelten said residents won't have to register to purchase cannabis. However, they will need to show an ID to prove they are Dutch citizens if asked.
Requiring a weed pass began to stop residents of Germany, Belgium and France from crossing the Dutch border to buy cannabis at coffee houses.
Since the pass was introduced, the Netherlands has seen an increase in illegal street dealings and other problems.
