GUSAU, Nigeria, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- An accident involving a bus and a car has claimed the lives of at least 17 people and injured dozens of others in northwestern Nigeria, police said.

Witnesses told police the driver of the bus lost control along the Sokoto-Gusau road in Zamfara state and collided with an oncoming car, Leadership newspaper reported Tuesday.

Earlier another bus veered off the Sokoto-Gusau road and crashed into a bush, killing six passengers.

The road has been the scene of frequent accidents, officials were told by local residents.
