WARSAW, Poland, Nov. 18 (UPI) -- Polish Deputy Prime Minister Waldemar Pawlak says he plans to resign after he lost the election for leader of his Polish Peasants Party.

Pawlak lost the election for president of PSL to parliament member Janusz Piechocinski Saturday by 547 votes to 530 at a party congress, Polskie Radio reported.

"Because I fundamentally disagree with the proposals Janusz Piechocinski, I will resign from the post of deputy prime minister and minister of economy," Pawlak, a former prime minister of Poland, said after the defeat.

Piechocinsk called on Pawlak to reconsider.

"You are deputy prime minister and economy minister, and should remain so," he said.
