Afghan policemen charged with bank heist

KABUL, Afghanistan, Nov. 18 (UPI) -- Afghan officials say the top suspects in a bank robbery are three national police officers who were supposed to be guarding the targeted bank.

Thieves made off late Friday night with about $550,000 from a bank in the northeastern province of Nouristan, the Los Angeles Times reported from Kabul.

Provincial Police Chief Ghulamullah Nooristani told the Times it didn't take long to apprehend two suspects in a nearby home with most of the money, although the third suspect was still at large Sunday.

The home the two men were hiding in belongs to a former regional government official. Because of that, Nooristani said an investigation was under way into whether "there are some power brokers behind" the robbery of central bank funds.
