NSC to discuss anti-government rally

BANGKOK, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- The deputy prime minister of Thailand Friday called for a meeting of the National Security Council to discuss a planned anti-government rally.

At the meeting, scheduled for Monday, officials will assess possible situations and consider whether it will be necessary to invoke a special law to ensure law and order during the protest, the Bangkok Post reported.

The special law would give the national police chief full authority to order state agencies to help maintain peace and order.

Chalerm said the NSC would make its decision based on the number of protesters who actually turn out for the protest, which was organized by the Pitak Siam group and is scheduled for Nov. 24.
