Chase in Canada covers 60 miles

GATINEAU, Quebec, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- A Canadian man led police on a 45-minute, 60-mile chase Wednesday that involved dozens of squad cars before he was caught, authorities said.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported the episode began about 10:30 a.m. in Gatineau, Quebec, where police said they spotted the 19-year-old man driving erratically.

The Ottawa Sun reported the Gatineau officers followed him for a couple of miles before breaking off the chase because of heavy traffic.

A check of the car's license plate showed it had been reported stolen and Quebec provincial police resumed the chase when they spotted the car on Highway 148 heading toward Grenville-sur-la-Rouge.

The Sun said the car clipped one cruiser while an officer was trying to set up a spike strip along the highway, rammed another one farther down the road and damaged a third one as police boxed it in and arrested the driver.

The CBC said dozens of police cruisers were involved overall and and at one point nine were following the suspect. No officers were injured, the Sun said.

The man, whose name wasn't released, was reported to be from either Ontario or Quebec. He is to appear in court Thursday on a range of charges, including dangerous driving, avoiding arrest and assault with a weapon.

The suspect was reported to have had a previous criminal record.
