Georgian ex-minister accused of torture

TIBILISI, Georgia, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- Charges of torture and false imprisonment have been filed against Georgia's former defense and interior minister, the chief prosecutor said Tuesday.

Bacho Akhalaya is accused of locking up 19 servicemen in a bathhouse for three days without food or heat, the official Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported.

Akhalaya was dismissed as interior minister in late September following claims of prisoner torture at a correctional facility in Tbilisi.

Last week a city court ordered that Akhalaya be taken into custody pending trial.
