ISTANBUL, Turkey, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- A Syrian fighter jet bombed a site near a town on the Turkish border Monday, killing at least six Syrians and injuring many people, officials said.

The bombs hit near Ras al-Ayn, an area on the Syrian side of the border near the Turkish town of Ceylanpinar, the Turkish website Yeni Safak reported.

The injured included Turks, officials said.

Ceylanpinar's mayor, Ismail Arslan, was quoted by the Hurriyet Daily News as saying he had "heard" the death toll was much higher.

An official in Turkey told Hurriyet the injured Syrians were transported by ambulances through a border crossing and taken to a hospital in the Turkish town.

The Turkish website said a number of houses and businesses were damaged in the bombing.

Ras al-Ayn has been the site of fierce gunbattles between Syrian regime and rebel forces in recent days and there was a massive flow of Syrian refugees across the border during the weekend, Hurriyet said.
