LJUBLJANA, Slovenia, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- Slovenian election officials said Monday former Prime Minister Borut Pahor won the first round of voting and will face incumbent Danilo Turk in a runoff.

Pahor, a member of the opposition Social Democratic Party, got 40 percent of the Sunday vote and Turk claimed 36 percent, the Financial Times reported.

The two candidates will face each other in a second round of voting for prime minister Dec. 2,

The Times reported that Parliament may move forward on a possible trade union-backed referendum concerning the government's economic restructuring plans.

Gregor Virant, the lower house speaker, was expected to support the beginning of a 35-day period in which the trade union that initiated the referendum on the government financial restructuring plan may collect the necessary 40,000 signatures for the motion to proceed.
