Savile chauffeur arrested on rape charge

MANCHESTER, England, Nov. 8 (UPI) -- Ray Teret, former chauffeur of disgraced British television star Jimmy Savile, was arrested on suspicion of rape, Manchester police said.

Teret, who also lived with Savile, was one of two men, age 61 and 71, arrested by detectives investigating three claims of sexual abuse. He is charged with suspicion of historic rape, a legal designation indicating the alleged incident occurred longer than one year ago, The Independent reported Thursday.

"I want to make it clear this is not an investigation into the late Jimmy Savile, nor do any of the allegations relate to any involvement by Savile," Manchester Police Detective Inspector Simon Davies said.

Savile died in 2011 after a long career as a television entertainer, disc jockey and charity fundraiser. He received a knighthood in 1990 for his philanthropic work. After his death, hundreds of allegations of child sex abuse were made against him, leading to public outrage and a backlash.

Savile's name was removed from the list of "Honorary Freemen of the Borough of Scarborough," an honor awarded him in 2005 by the city where he owned a home and was buried, the BBC reported Thursday.

Councillor Tom Fox said the action was taken to "acknowledge the courage of those who have come forward, having suffered horrendous abuse at the hands of the alleged serial predatory sexual offender Sir Jimmy Savile."

His family said it removed Savile's headstone "out of respect to public opinion."
