BEIJING, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- Two Chinese generals were promoted Sunday into the Communist Party's Central Military Commission, state-run media reported.

Army Gen. Fan Changlong, 65, and air force Gen. Xu Qiliang, 62, were appointed to the country's most powerful military body at the conclusion of a four-day meeting of the Communist Party's Central Commission, the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.

The commission is roughly equivalent to the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The promotions suggest the two men are also likely to be taken into the party's 25-member Politburo at a convention that begins in Beijing Nov. 8, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The Politburo is reorganized every five years.

The 370-member Central Commission also announced the expulsion of two members, Xinhua said.

Bo Xilai, former party chief of the southwestern city of Chongqing, was stripped of his status on allegations of taking bribes, sexual misconduct and abuse of power during an investigation into his wife, who was convicted of murder, Xinhua said.

Also, former railway minister Liu Zhijun was expelled for allegedly accepting bribes, the report said.
