Strikes to protest Greek austerity plan

The job actions are scheduled to begin Monday, Ekathimerini reported Saturday.

Lawyers say they will begin a five-day strike, while municipal workers, who face steep job cuts, plan to sit in at trash facilities and

municipal buildings.

In Athens, light-rail and tram workers say they are striking Monday and Tuesday, while bus and trolley drivers plan their action for Tuesday and Wednesday. Long-distance trains could also be idled Tuesday and Wednesday, the same days two major umbrella unions have announced a general strike.

Union organizers say they may allow some service on light-rail Monday because a major rally is planned in Athens.

The austerity package, demanded as the price of a European Union bailout for Greece, includes tax increases, wage and pension freezes and job cuts.
