PESHAWAR, Pakistan, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Pakistani jets and gunship helicopters struck hideouts in tribal Khyber Agency, killing 10 militants and injuring six, military officials said.

The operation Thursday was in the region's remote Tirah Valley in the Bara district, the Dawn newspaper reported, quoting the officials. They said security forces destroyed the house of a militant commander, known only as Javed, who is linked to the outlawed Lashkar-e-Islam group.

Pakistan's tribal areas are near the border with Afghanistan. U.S. officials say they are used as havens by the Taliban and al-Qaida operatives to launch attacks on coalition forces in Afghanistan.
