TORONTO, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- A Toronto-area man was killed early Thursday after being hit by two cars and then by a police car responding to the call, police said.

The unidentified 30-year-old man was first hit around 3:30 a.m. in Richmond Hill, neighboring Toronto to the north, the Toronto Star reported.

The driver fled the scene, leaving the man on the road, police said.

Soon after, a second driver in a Honda ran over the man. That driver called 911 and stayed at the scene, CITY-TV reported.

A York Regional Police car arriving also ran over the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene, the reports said.

An alert was issued for the hit-and-run vehicle, described as a 2006 to 2010 silver R-class Mercedes SUV that would show "obvious damage to the front end," York police said.

The provincial civilian Special Investigations Unit was called, which is standard procedure when a police officer is involved in civilian injuries or death

There was no immediate report of charges in the accident.
