Report: Immigrants in Italy top 5 million

ROME, Oct. 31 (UPI) -- The number of immigrants living in Italy has surpassed the five million mark, a report by the social justice organization Caritas indicated.

The report, published along with the Migrantes Foundation, said in the past year the number of foreigners living in Italy rose by 43,000, the Italian news agency ANSA reported Wednesday.

Romanians make up the largest immigrant group followed by Moroccans, Albanians and Ukrainians.

The majority of immigrants, 63.4 percent, reside in northern Italy, the report said, with 23.8 percent living in central regions and in 12.8 percent the south.

In terms of religion, Caritas said the majority of immigrants living in Italy are Orthodox Christian.

There was no information on when the report was prepared.
