TORONTO, Oct. 30 (UPI) -- Post-tropical storm Sandy hit Southern Ontario after battering the U.S. Northeast late Monday and killed at least one person while cutting power to thousands.

The massive storm brought high winds and sheets of rain to Toronto overnight, 680 News reported.

A woman in her 30s was struck and killed by a sign that blew off a west-end store and an east-end clothing store was damaged by fire that officials said was whipped by the storm, officials said.

In Toronto, 45,000 customers were without power Tuesday morning, mostly because of trees bringing down utility lines, the report said. Outside of the city, another 93,000 people had no electricity, utility officials said.

Fourteen Toronto schools announced closures Tuesday.

As the rainy and gusty system moved eastward, some 48,000 homes and businesses in Quebec had no electricity, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. said.

Environment Canada issued wind and rain warnings Tuesday for the southern tip of New Brunswick and parts of Nova Scotia, Macleans magazine said.
