KUWAIT CITY, Oct. 29 (UPI) -- Kuwaiti officials vowed not to allow political unrest to consume the country following the observance of Eid al-Adha.
"The government is fully ready to deal with any unexpected developments, especially following the calls for civil disobedience," government officials said.
Officials said the government was ready to respond any form of civil disobedience, such as strikes, Gulf News reported Monday.
Police clashed with demonstrators last week during a rally protesting a decision to amend Kuwait's election laws to reduce the number of candidates for whom a voter can vote from four to one.
The government said it wanted a fair representation based on the "one voter, one vote" principle, Gulf News said. Opposition leaders said the amendment was meant to reinforce the government's power and reduce the influence of opposition parties.
Online social networks said a new rally was scheduled for Sunday.
Several media outlets reported the government was pushing forward with its parliamentary elections, scheduled for Dec. 1.
