MELBOURNE, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- The accused killer of an Australian Broadcasting Corp. employee was hospitalized Sunday after a botched suicide attempt, the Herald Sun in Melbourne said.
Adrian Ernest Bayley, 41, underwent surgery at St. Vincent's Hospital to mend extensive wounds he allegedly inflicted on himself in an attempt to take his own life, the newspaper reported Sunday.
A Department of Justice spokesman confirmed an inmate had been transported to the hospital due to self-inflicted injuries, but declined to identify the prisoner.
Police charged Bayley, of Coburg, with the rape and murder of Jill Meagher. She was last seen Sept. 22 as she walked home alone from a bar in Brunswick. Her body was discovered in a shallow roadside grave Sept. 28.
Meanwhile, many of Meagher's friends gathered at the Brunswick Green hotel to celebrate what would have been her 30th birthday, the Herald Sun reported.
