Flash floods in Turkey kill three people

ISTANBUL, Turkey, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- Three people died in the northwestern Turkish province of Kirklareli Tuesday after torrential rains triggered flash flooding, authorities said.

The bodies of the three, dragged away by floodwaters, were found by search and rescue teams, Today's Zaman reported.

The floods destroyed some 50 homes in the town of Buyukkaristiran, Deputy Mayor Mesut Colak said.

He said most residents escaped the floodwaters by climbing on the roofs of their homes and up trees until rescuers arrived.

Firefighters in the neighboring province of Tekirdag rescued some 300 people who were trapped in flooded homes.
