Chinese man gets 5 years for selling baby

HANGZHOU, China, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- A Chinese man was sentenced to five years in prison for selling his newborn son to pay off debts, officials said.

The man, identified by the official Xinhua news agency as Zhuo, sold the 27-day-old baby for 65,000 yuan ($10,300) in October, 2011, near his home in the eastern province of Jiangsu.

The man's wife reported the incident to police in the city of Hangzhou two months after the baby's sale.

The child was eventually located and reunited with his mother.

Zhuo said he had amassed debt in gold trading and needed the money. He told a Jiangsu judge he was ashamed of his actions.
