VLADIKAVKAZ, Russia, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- A car filled with explosives blew up at a border checkpoint between the Russian republics of North Ossetia and Ingushetia Tuesday, a ministry spokeswoman said.

Alla Akhpolova of the North Ossetian Interior Ministry said the blast killed one police officer and injured three others, the Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported.

"The explosion was so powerful that parts of the car were scatted within a radius of 328 feet," Akhpolova said.

Authorities said the car was driven by a suicide bomber but there was no information on who was behind the attack.
