U.S. deployment upsets Korea college plans

EUIJEONGBU, South Korea, Oct. 21 (UPI) -- Officials in a South Korean city say the deployment of a U.S. Army battalion to their community could torpedo plans to convert their base into a college campus.

The 23rd Chemical Battalion has orders to relocate from the United States to Camp Stanley in Euijeongbu in the spring, but the city signed a memorandum of understanding in 2009 that will turn Camp Stanley over to the South Korean government in 2016.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency said plans were already in the works to transform the U.S. base into a campus of Konkuk University.

Yonhap said the 23rd had been based in South Korea before. It was moved to Washington state in 2004 under an agreement that turned over more defense responsibilities to the South Korean military.
