"It was a horrible experience," the 53-year-old patient told the newspaper Smalandsposten. "I heard what they said and felt them working down there without being able to do anything."
The woman last week was awarded 8,000 kronor ($1,216) and an apology from her surgeons for the bizarre incident, which occurred late last year.
The woman said she desperately tried to get the attention of the surgical team and signal to them that she was awake. "I struggled because it was so terribly painful, but without making any contact."
The case was written up in a medical journal, The Local.se said. So-called wakefulness while under anesthesia is a known phenomenon that experts consider to be quite unusual.
