LONDON, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- Eurotunnel Thursday celebrated the passage of the 300 millionth person to travel through the Channel Tunnel between the United Kingdom and France.

Since the Channel Tunnel opened in June 1994, 300 million people have passed through, traveling by car or truck, or aboard Le Shuttle or Eurostar buses, Eurotunnel said in a release.

On average, nearly 50,000 people travel through the Channel Tunnel every day.

"The Channel Tunnel is a vital link between Great Britain and the continent, which has revolutionized transport behavior. This unique piece of infrastructure has created a market which could not have existed if it had not been built and has, as a result, made a significant contribution to economic development," said Jacques Gounon, chairman and chief executive officer of Groupe Eurotunnel SA.
