PKK attacks kill 3 Turkish soldiers

ANKARA, Turkey, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- Three Turkish soldiers were killed in attacks on their outposts by members of the terrorist Kurdistan Workers Party, officials said.

The attacks occurred overnight Tuesday on a police outpost in Isikli and an airbase in Cukurca, a mountainous area along the borders with Iraq and Iran, Today's Zaman reported.

The Turkish military launched a large operation, assisted by helicopters, to search for the attackers in the region bordering Iraq, officials said.

The PKK has been designated a terrorist group by Turkey, the United States and the European Union. In recent months, the Turkish military has faced regular attacks from the group.

More than 40,000 people have been killed since the PKK began attacks in 1984.
